We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced Welding & Fabrication Manufacturing Technician to join the University of Manchester. This will initially be a temporary on-going contract. As with any temporary on-going contract, the job could end at any time due to quiet periods.

During these quiet periods, the University will do everything they can to keep hold of you, and in most cases, they are able to find other engineering roles within the University.

Role Details

  • Welding and fabrication of components and provide welding and fabrication technical support.
  • Demonstrating and supervising small groups of students in TIG/MIG welding techniques to give them of an appreciation of these process.
  • Working with students in the welding and fabrication of the Formulae Student race car.
  • Under the supervision of the Workshop Manager you will be responsible for the high integrity welding and fabrication of components using various metal joining processes and techniques e.g. TIG, MIG, MMA, soldering and brazing on a wide variety of ferrous and non ferrous materials such as: aluminium, steels, stainless steels and titanium.


  • High integrity welding and fabrication of components using a range of metal joining processes.
  • Design, construction and commissioning of welded/fabricated assemblies.
  • Troubleshooting, repair and planned maintenance of workshop equipment;
  • Assist with design, provide technical specifications and to construct teaching and experimental equipment both in the workshop and laboratory environment;
  • Provide time estimates for completion of components or construction of experimental equipment;
  • Planning and organising own workload to ensure completion to agreed deadlines.
  • Training and assessment of competency of staff and students in the use of workshop facilities and equipment;
  • Instruction of undergraduate and postgraduate students during project work.
  • Operation of Good Workshop Practice; Attention to general workshop upkeep and tidiness to include cleaning machines and sweeping floor areas in accordance with local rules.
  • Operate in accordance with health and safety procedures, hazard, risk, COSHH assessments and local policies and proceed as defined by the Faculty Health and Safety Manager;
  • Risk and COSHH assessments for welding and fabrication activities.
  • To train, assess competency and to ensure correct and safe usage of varied workshop equipment by undergraduates, postgraduates and members of staff;
  • Responsibility to monitor activities of self and others in the course of work to ensure that health and safety regulations are properly observed.
  • Assisting in the development of written procedures, guidelines and protocols (e.g. risk assessments) in support of safe practice and activities where appropriate. This will involve liaison with the Faculty Health & Safety Manager.
  • Advise staff, students, trainees and visitors on matters of technique and use of welding & fabrication equipment, machine tools and other workshop equipment. This may involve informal one to one training, demonstrations or provision of advice and can be highly specialised and technical in nature. May also offer advice to students on their projects etc;
  • Liaison with outside and UOL agencies, equipment suppliers and repairers;
  • Provide coaching and mentoring where appropriate to technical staff outside of immediate work area, as directed by the Mechanical Services Manager.


  • The ability to manufacture components using conventional machining techniques i.e. turning, milling and drilling or the willingness to learn would be a distinct advantage.
  • IOSH General Certificate or other equivalent qualifications.
  • Computer literacy.


  • Apprentice Trained Craft Technician
  • Education: BTEC HNC in a mechanical/manufacturing engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive experience of working in a welding and fabrication environment.
  • Ability to use an engineering drawing to assess the methods of manufacture and be able to suggest alternative methods where appropriate and more cost effective.
  • Time management skills with the ability to manage personal and workload, providing accurate deadlines for completion of welding & fabrication work.
  • Team player as part of a workshop manufacturing team with a ‘hands-on’ approach to workloads and be able contribute towards the continuous improvement of the workshop environment.
  • Ability to keep abreast of the latest developments in mechanical technology, including safety regulations.
  • General engineering welding, fabrication skills
  • Proven interpersonal skills, the ability to liaise effectively with staff throughout the Faculty and with outside contacts.
  • Accuracy and dependability is of the utmost importance: a failure of standards could have significant implications.
  • Flexibility in a changing environment and an enthusiastic working approach with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team and be able use their own initiative.
  • Self-motivation and a willingness to accept responsibility.

35 hours paid per week.

Increase from 28 (20 + 8 stats) to
