This is a great opportunity for a vehicle technician keen on motorsports, to provide technical and manufacturing support to the university’s Formula Student race team during the design, build, test, and race phases.

Ongoing temporary contract with opportunity for longer fixed-term post.

Role Details

  • Provide technical and manufacturing support to the university’s Formula Student race team during design, build, test, and race phases
  • Liaise with workshop teams (welding, electrical/electronics, mechanical workshops) to ensure that the team’s work requests are submitted in a timely manner and that project deadlines can be met.
  • Ensure that the team’s practical activities are conducted in a safe manner.
  • Work with academic colleagues and the Formula Student team to plan for and enable the transition of the team’s activities into new facilities in 2022.
  • To follow procedures appertaining to the safe operation of equipment and usage. To ensure continuing compliance with all health and safety regulations, undertaking appropriate staff training.
  • To assist the technical manager with the management of all health and safety matters in the team’s workshop areas.
  • To act at all times in accordance with the University’s policies and procedures relating to Equal Opportunities, Health and Safety, and all other policies and procedures, which apply to the post.
  • To undertake appropriate training and development activities.

Duties

  • Provide technical design and manufacturing support to the Formula Student team.
  • Ensure the team operates in a safe manner and complies with all relevant health and safety requirements.
  • Train team members in basic workshop techniques and supervise their activities.
  • Coordinate team activities to ensure that milestones and targets are met.
  • Support the teaching activities of the mechanical workshop team during quieter periods in the FS team calendar.
  • Independently plan and prioritise your own day-to-day tasks and how they are done based on your own knowledge and experience.
  • Liaison with outside suppliers, ordering of equipment and materials, and control of consumables stock.
  • To undertake other duties commensurate with the grade and experience of the post-holder.

Essentials

  • Good working knowledge of vehicle technology.
  • A keen interest in motor sports and vehicles would be desirable.
  • HNC/HND/Degree depending on practical experience.
  • Extensive experience of working in a mechanical workshop environment (lathes, milling machines).
  • Knowledge of CAD, particularly Solidworks.
  • Familiarity with electrical/electronics systems would be an advantage
  • Able to cope and work under pressure in a busy environment, working to deadlines.
  • Able to deal with staff and students at all levels in a pleasant, helpful, and efficient manner.
  • Well organised.
  • Good communicator.
