We are working with Whitby Marine Discovery Centre to recruit an Community Engagement and Education Officer for an exciting two-year community project called “Sea Story”, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

This is a creative, people-focused role where you will work with local communities to collect and share Whitby’s maritime stories through workshops, events, and digital content.

The role:

You will be responsible for engaging with local people, schools, and community groups to gather stories and bring them to life through a range of formats. This will include delivering workshops, supporting volunteers, and helping shape exhibitions and digital content.

Key duties include:

Collecting and recording oral histories from local residents and fishing communities
Running storytelling workshops with schools and community groups
Working with volunteers and supporting their development
Helping create content for exhibitions, digital platforms, and educational resources
Supporting community events, including storytelling evenings and open days
Building relationships with local organisations and partners
Managing records, feedback, and project administration

What we are looking for:

Experience in community engagement, education, heritage, or storytelling
Confident communication skills and ability to work with people of all ages
Experience delivering workshops or group sessions
Strong organisational skills and ability to manage projects
Good IT skills and ability to create and manage content
A genuine interest in people, communities, and local heritage

Desirable:

Experience working with schools or young people
Experience working with older people or community groups
Knowledge of Whitby or maritime heritage
Experience supporting volunteers
Creative skills such as photography, audio, or content creation

Training will be provided
